Traveling exhibition – VALCAMONICA ROCK ART: THE ROOTS OF EUROPEAN CULTURE

The rock art of Valcamonica was the first Italian site added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, as well as the first site with rock art to be included, along with the painted caves of the Vézère Valley in France.

Valcamonica boasts one of the largest concentrations of post-Paleolithic rock art in the world and the largest in Europe. The driving force behind this extraordinary phenomenon of European prehistory is to be found in the continuation of a tradition, whose motivation must have been deeply rooted in the collective imagination of local populations.

This exhibition presents Valcamonica in the broader context of European rock art, defining an ideal “prehistoric route” connecting the shores of the Mediterranean to Scandinavia, following an ideal itinerary from PRAT – CARP Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe – “Paths of European prehistoric rock art,” of which CCSP is a member.
